At Seagrass, we believe that the mind/body connection is one of the most important factors of wellbeing. Our emotions can affect our bodies in a physical way, that same way the pain or illness can affect our emotions. Our bodies are amazing! They are designed to look after us and keep us safe, sometimes this works a little too well. We are built to be able to deal with a stressful or dangerous situation, we detect the stressor and either prepare to run away or stand and fight. This, as you know, is called the ‘Fight or Flight Response’.
During this response we breath faster to take in more oxygen ready to run, we release chemicals into the body that help to give us energy and suppress our digestive and immune system, as when running away we need all of our energy focussed on escaping. Once we have got away from the stressful situation the body will return to its normal functioning self.
What if the stressful situation isn’t something that you can run away from? What if the stressor is your job or caring for a loved one. The stressor may not be resolved. We may be stuck in the Fight or Flight Response. This can lead to chronic distress, and even if the situation is finally resolved the result of the long-term stress can have long-lasting effects on our bodies. Pain can have very similar effects or the body. When we have an injury, the body sends signals to protect that area. The fascia and muscles tighten to look after the injury. The same stress response is triggered.
The good news is that we have ways of helping ourselves to switch off the Fight or Flight and switch on the response that releases the happy chemicals in our brain. Massage is a powerful and extremely effective technique for switching our nervous system to the ‘Rest and Digest’ mode and releasing tension that causes pain.

Hot Stone Therapeutic Massage
Hot stone massage takes the body to a much deeper level of relaxation helping the body to restore its natural functions and promote healing, this is an ancient therapy that has been in use for over 2,000 years. Smooth, heated stones help to warm up tight muscles so if you experience chronic muscle soreness, we can get deeper into the massage more quickly as the heat melts away the tension allowing us to work on pressure points and problem areas to alleviate tension and stress. The stones feel soft on the skin and the use of warmed oil helps them to gently glide along the skin. This massage works deeper in to the muscles than is often possible in a conventional deep-tissue or Swedish massage. Along with relieving tension, hot stone massage can help to promote sleep, relieve pain, boost immunity, and even decrease depression, and pain. Hot stone massage should trigger a deeply relaxed, blissed-out and meditative state and increase your sense of relaxation and calm.
Myofascial Release Technique
Myofascial Release Therapy (MFR) specifically addresses the fascia. This connective tissue runs like a three-dimensional web throughout the body. It surrounds and supports every cell, nerve, organ, muscle, and bone in your body. When thinking about fascia we need to not think that we have 600 plus muscles in our body, but instead one individual muscle in 600 plus different fascial pockets. Fascia extends throughout the whole body, it doesn’t just stop at bones, and muscles and ligaments, it connects to the innermost parts of our cellular structure. Additionally, fascia is tightly integrated into the autonomic nervous system. It is particularly effective at contracting throughout the entire body when the nervous system is in fight-or-flight mode, in an effort to protect the body.
After trauma, the ground substance in fascia, which should be fluid, starts to solidify and turns into crushing pressure on pain-sensitive structures. Fascia restrictions can impede proper cellular metabolism, respiration, nutrition, elimination and lymphatic flow. It can also influence the immune system in a negative way. Releasing these restrictions is incredibly important to our overall health and wellbeing. MFR uses a very gentle, sustained pressure, by going slowly and waiting for the body’s natural rhythm, the fascia responds by elongating, rehydrating, and reorganizing. Ultimately, restoring movement and reducing pain.
